The orchestra is an ensemble with a variable staff that has about twenty musicians depending on the work performed and it is for this training that the main compositions were written.
The intent of the orchestra’s research is to build a path on improvised music, integrating it with different compositional languages. The collective also functions as a pool of musical resources from which the individual components can draw in order to produce personal works. The orchestra also aims to be a privileged place to perform and carry out artistic and musical research.
The Collective Improvisation Orchestra is a collective development engine for works that start from individual members of the ensemble. Over the past few years the following works have been created and produced:
Nova Eco
Guglielmo Hardouin (2016)
The work focuses on the regulation of improvisation through the three fundamentals of music: imitation, integration and contrast. These elements are the same that biologically intervene in the evolutionary process of a species and to which the author refers through an acute analogy.
3Textures
Paolo Possidente (2018)
Elements of jazz, rock and free improvisation mix with the aesthetics of minimalist music to generate atmospheres that are sometimes dense and tense, sometimes relaxed and rarefied.
In figurative art, a texture is an image composed of the more or less ordered repetition of one or more graphic elements. The orderly overlapping of repetitive patterns exhibited by individual musicians creates a chaotic sound plot as a whole, but mathematizable if broken down into its individual parts.
Orcheisthai
Simone Farò (2017)
The composition divided into three movements is the compendium of the improvisation processes developed in the early laboratory years; the sound objects are skilfully mixed through the elements of conventional writing, nevertheless it remains a work of experimentation and mobility of the contents enclosed in a fixed form.
Coetus 343
Guglielmo Diana and Paolo Possidente (2019)
Work freely inspired by Gruppen by Karlheniz Stockhausen, it is based on the division of the ensemble into three quartets conducted by as many conductors. The sound objects used in the composition are small harmonic / rhythmic cells that lead to a sound complexity due to their overlapping.
Orchestral works
Conduction
Conduction is one of the main tools for organizing collective improvisation.
It is a series of correspondences between the gestures of a conductor and the sound objects expressed by the group of musicians. Over the years Pietra Tonale has developed an autonomous system of signs starting from those of Bucth Morris, thus transforming a formative work into a performative work.
Triumphi
Guglielmo Diana
The work is a conduction where the signs are replaced by the major arcana of the tarot; this symbolic translation involves a significant change in terms of composition
impromptu: no longer in the hands of the conductor, it is entrusted to the various techniques of divination and deck reading.
No Standards!
Jacopo Acquafresca
A series of songs not belonging, but somehow close, to the tradition of jazz standards, are performed by alternating improvisational processes that radically modify their content.
Footwork
Jacopo Acquafresca
The project develops in a long improvisation whose aesthetic refers to different styles timbres and phraseology of the footwork, genre and current of the 90s house dance. Designed to move!
Pietra Tonale Tour
Pietra Tonale has organized and realized several concerts abroad: in April 2018 and 2019 in collaboration with the international exhibition International Creative Residences and the Springtime Jazz Festival association it played at the Konzertkirken and at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. Both occasions led to the establishment of a large orchestra made up of musicians from the conservatory and from the collective (E.I.O. – European International Orchestra).
In June 2019 a quintet of the collective made a tour in Germany in collaboration with Radio Banda Larga – Berlin.
